Great Yarmouth, We Rise: Why Allyship Matters More Than Ever This Pride

Great Yarmouth, we have a problem. And it’s not a new one. In recent times, the vitriol and bigotry directed towards the LGBTQ+ community, particularly our trans siblings, has reached a fever pitch. Our local MP, Rupert Lowe, has made his views painfully clear, peddling harmful misinformation and fueling a climate of fear and division. His words are not just hurtful; they are dangerous.

But we will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. We will not be erased. This Pride season, and especially at the upcoming GYWPride march and celebrations, we stand stronger than ever. And we need you – our cisgender heterosexual allies – to stand with us.

Why Allyship Matters Now More Than Ever:

* Amplifying Our Voices: In the face of hateful rhetoric, your voices carry immense power. When you speak out against injustice, you amplify our message and demonstrate that we are not alone.

* Creating Safe Spaces: Pride is about celebration, but it’s also about visibility and safety. Your presence in the march and at our events creates a visible show of support, making our community feel safer and more welcomed.

* Combating Misinformation: Lies and harmful stereotypes thrive in silence. By educating yourselves and challenging misinformation, you become powerful advocates for truth and understanding.

* Building Bridges: Allyship is about more than just showing up. It’s about building genuine relationships, listening to our experiences, and understanding the unique challenges we face.

* Challenging Local Bigotry: Rupert Lowe’s views do not represent the heart of Great Yarmouth. We need to show him, and the world, that our community values inclusivity, respect, and love. Your presence at Pride is a powerful act of resistance against his divisive agenda.

* Protecting Trans Rights: Trans rights are human rights. The attacks on our trans siblings are attacks on all of us. We need allies to be vocal and visible in their support of trans equality.

What You Can Do:

* Join the GYWPride March and Celebrations: Your presence matters. Show up, bring your friends, and make your support visible.

* Educate Yourself: Learn about the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the trans community. There are many excellent resources available online and within our community.

* Speak Out: Challenge bigoted comments and misinformation when you hear them. Don’t be afraid to use your voice.

* Listen and Learn: Make space for LGBTQ+ voices. Listen to our experiences and learn from our perspectives.

* Support LGBTQ+ Organisations: Donate your time or money to local and national organisations that are working to advance LGBTQ+ rights.

* Vote: Use your vote to support candidates who are committed to equality and justice.

Great Yarmouth deserves better. We deserve better. This Pride, let’s show the world that love and acceptance will always triumph over hate. Let’s stand together, united in our commitment to a more inclusive and just community for all.

We look forward to seeing you at GYWPride. Let’s make history together.
