Why are “straight pride” events are generally considered unnecessary:
- Societal Norm:
- Heterosexuality is the societal norm and has historically been privileged. Straight people don’t face systemic discrimination based on their sexual orientation.
- Therefore, there’s no need to assert or defend a position of dominance.
- Lack of Historical Oppression:
- LGBTQ+ Pride events arose from a history of oppression, discrimination, and marginalization. They serve to commemorate the struggle for equal rights and visibility.
- Straight people have not experienced this type of systemic oppression.
- Focus on Inclusion vs. Exclusion:
- LGBTQ+ Pride aims to create inclusive spaces and celebrate diversity.
- “Straight pride” events often carry undertones of exclusion and can be perceived as a reaction against LGBTQ+ visibility.
- The difference between pride, and reaction:
- LGBTQ+ pride is about celebrating the right to exist. It’s about celebrating the right to love. Society has historically tried to deny these rights, and still does in many places.
- Straight pride is often seen as a reaction to LGBTQ+ pride. It is not an event created to celebrate any type of oppression that heterosexual people have faced.
In essence, the need for Pride stems from a history of fighting for basic human rights. Heterosexual people have not had to endure this fight.
No one says you can’t have your own event. Remember you should be celebrating the fact you haven’t had to fight for your basic human rights. Support those who are still fighting for theirs.
